Hydraulic Directional Drilling
Precision, Innovation, and Reliability in Action...
At Source Civil Ltd, precision and efficiency drive every project we undertake. Our latest Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operation demonstrates our commitment to innovative solutions in challenging environments. Spanning two critical sections, this project showcases our ability to navigate complex terrain, ensuring minimal disruption while meeting exacting standards.
This HDD project involved the completion of two critical sections designed to install medium-voltage ducting with precision and efficiency:
HDD Section 1:
- Two 600mm bores over 109 meters.
- Crossing two farm access roads to install 2 x 225mm and 1 x 50mm HDPE SDR 17 medium-voltage ducting per bore.

HDD Section 2:
- Two 600mm bores spanning 142 meters under a busy roadway.
- The installation required precise drilling at a depth of 4.5m to avoid existing services, including MV cables, gas lines, foul, and water mains.

Key Features of the Operation
Meticulous Setup and Planning
- The HDD rig was positioned at the entry pit with all supporting systems, including the recycling unit, bentonite mixing tank, and sand collection skip, strategically arranged to facilitate seamless operations.
Efficient Drilling Process
- The operation commenced with the pilot bore, guided with precision to exit at the planned exit pit locations. Bentonite fluids were pumped back to the recycling unit, ensuring sustainable operations throughout.
Recycling and Fluid Management
- A tanker system efficiently transferred drilling fluids between pits for recycling, minimizing waste and maintaining an eco-conscious workflow.
Back Reaming and Pipe Pulling
- Once the pilot bore was completed, back reaming expanded the bore to accommodate the ducting. This was followed by the successful pulling of 2 x 225mm and 1 x 50mm HDPE pipes through the boreholes, completing each section with precision.
