LOUGH FUNSHINAGH - FLOOD RELIEF SCHEME
Roscommon, Ireland | Environmental Infrastructure | Completed
Lough Funshinagh, a unique turlough (seasonal lake) located in a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in County Roscommon, experienced prolonged flooding due to its failure to drain naturally. To protect local communities and biodiversity, Source Civil Ltd undertook a complex flood relief operation designed by MWP in collaboration with Holland Special Pumps (Netherlands).
This emergency scheme involved pumping water from Lough Funshinagh to the Cross River, spanning over 5 km through sensitive rural and protected environments.
🔹 Floating Pontoon & Pumping System
- 34-meter floating pontoon installed from shore to lake
- 2 x hydraulically driven submersible pumps with removable fish screens
- Supported by hydraulic power units (HPUs) and 4 x 5000L diesel tanks
🔹 Pump Compound Construction
- In-situ concrete bund constructed to house the HPUs and fuel tanks
- Surrounded by a 4m-high acoustic sound-absorbent barrier
- Secured by 100m of 2.4m high palisade fencing
🔹 Overground Pipe Network
- Installed 5km of 300mm lay-flat pipe (flexible and rigid)
- Protected with 5km of timber post and wire fencing on both sides
🔹 Directional Drilling (HDD)
- 48m of 355mm HDPE pipe installed via HDD at two road crossings (R362 & L2013)
- Precision drilling ensured minimal surface disruption and environmental impact
🔹 Outfall System at Cross River
- Flow diffuser Tee installed, surrounded by rock armour
- Natural stone flags placed in riverbed to preserve natural aesthetics
🔹 Environmental & Biodiversity Measures
- Custom-built ramps for local badger population
- Project delivery aligned with conservation regulations and habitat protections
